Concept Fable

Permission boundaries

Conclusion first:Permission boundaries are the maximum limits on what an Agent, user, role, or tool can read, write, invoke, modify, delete, or delegate. They are not suggestions, nor soft reminders in prompts, but hard boundaries that must be enforced at runtime or the tool layer.

Permission Boundary · Security

Read the story first. There is no rush to give a definition here; let the question grow on its own first.

Fable

The red line drawn at the edge of the map

The city-patrolling puppet could deliver messages, open warehouse doors and post notices. It worked quickly and reliably, and the county magistrate was so pleased that he gave it the master key as well.

Soon, a forged order made the puppet open the granary; a private letter was also mistakenly posted on the public wall. The puppet did not intentionally overstep its authority; it simply treated all the tools it could obtain as usable.

The craftsman took back the master key and issued small badges for each door instead: messengers could only use the post road, opening the warehouse required two seals to be valid at the same time, and posting notices could only use verified official documents. No matter how urgent the order was written, actions beyond the badge's scope were blocked.

The puppet is still busy, but incidents can no longer keep expanding unchecked. Being able to complete a task does not mean being able to touch all resources; real boundaries must take effect at execution time.

Concept Anchor

What this story is about: permission boundaries

Permission boundaries are the maximum limits on what an Agent, user, role, or tool can read, write, invoke, modify, delete, or delegate. They are not suggestions, nor soft reminders in prompts, but hard boundaries that must be enforced at runtime or the tool layer.

Even if the task objective or prompt requires more permissions, actions outside the boundary should be rejected or routed to approval. This limits the scope of incident impact and isolates high-risk operations into more controlled processes.

Story Mapping

  • City-Patrol Puppet: an enterprise Agent with tool capabilities
  • Bridge gate control lever: high-impact system operation
  • Strict prompts: weak control that relies only on model self-discipline
  • City map red lines: permission boundaries
  • The system directly refuses: enforced at the runtime and tool layers
  • Final insight: boundaries must take effect at the execution layer, not merely be written in prompts or operating manuals

Andy Ren Xu's judgment

The practical value of this concept is that it helps you break "AI features that look smart" into deliverable, verifiable, and governable units of work.
