Fable
The weaving workshop picks out a single idle thread from the fabric surface
The key here is to apply the concept's constraints to specific objects, rather than merely describing an outcome.
As scale and exceptions increased, the methods previously held together by ad hoc coordination began to expose blind spots.
Short-term patches restore surface order, but do not address what the concept truly constrains.
The old craftsman turned to recording conditions, actions, results and the chain of responsibility, so that subsequent adjustments had evidence to rely on.
It was only when moving timber after autumn that people discovered the branch shape was still complex, the carpenter could not carry fewer ladders, and the fruit pickers still took no fewer detours. The gardener ran another experiment: which small branches could be cut without harming the tree, and which whole-branch adjustments could truly save labor, were recorded separately. This step was troublesome and at first slowed the schedule; but after several rounds, rework decreased, and the masters no longer changed the rules on a whim. Everyone finally saw that unstructured pruning can reduce parameter or memory pressure, but only when runtime supports sparsity can it possibly bring real speedup.
Piecemeal slimming and changing the overall structure are two different kinds of optimization, and deployment results must be verified separately.
Piecemeal slimming can reduce the load, but it does not necessarily make the people doing the work faster right away. From then on, removing many small things and changing the overall shape were two different effects.
