Fable
The kitchen turned the ancestral recipe book into reproducible stove instructions
There are many bronze figures in the mechanism workshop. The bronze figures themselves are similar, but when handed to different shops they must act according to different rules: the teahouse requires gentleness, the escort agency requires brevity, and the clinic requires caution.
At first the master relied on verbal instructions. Today someone changed the opening ritual, tomorrow someone changed the taboos, the day after someone added tool keys, and over time no one could clearly say which set of rules each bronze puppet used. Apprentices also privately changed the bronze puppets' tone, thinking it was just a small fix. After several times, the same bronze puppet seemed to change personality across different shifts, and customer complaints could not be traced to the source of the change.
Once an escort agency bronze puppet was mistakenly loaded with a teahouse personality, and when an urgent order came it still chatted slowly; the teahouse bronze puppet took the escort agency's password and scared off customers. The shopkeepers realized that beyond the puppet itself, a traceable assembly sheet was needed. After the misassembly incident, the mechanism workshop began asking: which base sheet did this puppet wake up from, which keys had it taken, and who changed the taboos and when. Verbal agreements could answer none of it.
The old craftsman wrote the base, tone, available tools, taboos, examples and version all onto the same wooden board. When rules changed, he no longer relied on memory but changed the board, kept the date, and could roll back. The first version of the board only wrote the current rules, not the old version. After one bad change that couldn't be rolled back, the old craftsman added version numbers, change reasons and recovery methods.
Shopkeepers also had to learn to distinguish the bronze puppet itself from the wooden plaque. Replacing the bronze puppet might be very expensive, while replacing the wooden plaque could be quick; but if the wooden plaque was written badly, even the best bronze puppet would wake up according to bad rules.
Before delivery, the mechanism workshop also does a wake-up test. It wakes the bronze puppet with the wooden token and has it handle a few typical tasks; if the tone, taboos or instruments are wrong, the token is fixed before delivery. Configuration must be verified.
Later the mechanism workshop opened new shops, and the shopkeeper did not simply copy the old wooden sign. The teahouse's gentleness did not suit a pharmacy, and the escort agency's brevity did not suit a school. The value of a configuration sheet is precisely in spelling out the rules before placing the same copper puppet into different settings.
From then on, the mechanism workshop delivered not only bronze figures, but also configuration instructions for how they should wake up, how they should speak, what they could touch, and what they could not. Only by writing these clearly would the bronze figures not become something else in different shops.
